EXAMINING THE SMALLHOLDER FARMERS IN KARNATAKA

Agriculture is gradually dying, not just in terms of food production but also as a profession. The profession involves rustic and back-breaking jobs and a line of challenges ahead. Many natural consequences thwart smallholder farmers to achieve sustainable agriculture. Many trails show that natural calamities are the major setback that risks the opportunity for a good yield. 

India needs a different set of solutions for agriculture and alternatives to ensure distressed farmers are not left out. 

Farmers are affected not just by natural calamities but also through the unfair trading system. So, how does a farmer earn his money? While no data cannot fully capture the economy and income, however, suicide cases are a significant highlight to prove that farmers' life is challenging.

The smallholders rely entirely on small-sized farmlands; the crisis is deep-rooted. Many smallholders quit farming because they experienced low profits, low income, high debts, and many other factors squeezing farmers' profit margins. 

Sirisha Talanki, Research Head, researched agriculture and farmers' livelihood, and team member Kiran Lamani, Research & Marketing Analyst, approached Belagavi, Karnataka, to learn practical scenarios. In contrast, the team discovered no reliable and robust government schemes that reach every farmer in the state. The visit also stated that the decline in wages was driven by agriculture production caused by cutbacks in strategies, unfair trading, unfavourable weather, high debts, etc., which resulted in one of the sharpest declines in farmers' growth. 

Observing the complexities of farmers, the fundamental question arises as to how government bodies are trying to help farmers? The problems are so dire that the government's ignorance in assisting farmers is losing hope in government schemes and non-profit organizations that desire to help the farmers.
